Services & prices

Every price, itemised, before you ever pick up the phone.

Since 1962 our prices have hung framed in the front hall. This page is the same list, kept to the dollar. If a figure isn't here, we don't charge it.

Direct cremation

$1,795

One figure, complete

No service with us — just every practical thing done properly, and the ashes home in days, not weeks.

  • Collection at any hour, within 30 miles
  • Care of the person who has died
  • A simple, fitting cremation container
  • All paperwork, permits and certificates
  • The crematorium fee — included
  • Ashes returned to you by hand, not post

Cremation with chapel service

$3,950

One figure, complete

The shape most families choose: a farewell in our chapel with the people and music that mattered, then cremation in our care.

  • Everything in a direct cremation
  • Use of our chapel, up to 90 guests
  • A celebrant or clergy of your choosing
  • Order-of-service booklets, printed here
  • Our standard white flower arrangement
  • Recorded music, or our own pianist

Funeral with viewing & burial

$6,850

One figure, complete

The traditional order of things, unhurried: a private goodbye, a full service, and a burial — with us at every step.

  • Collection and care, any hour
  • Dressing, and a private viewing room
  • A solid timber casket, lined
  • Chapel or graveside service
  • Hearse and one following car
  • Every permit and notice handled

Not included in any figure: the cemetery's own interment fee, monuments, newspaper notices, and flowers beyond our standard arrangement. Every one of those costs is shown in writing before you commit to anything at all.

Where we stand

The honest arithmetic

The national median for a funeral with viewing and burial is around $8,300 before the plot. Ours is $6,850 with the casket included. We can hold that line because this house is paid for, the family does the work, and nobody upstairs takes a margin.

  • Nobody at Merriden House works on commission — not now, not ever.
  • The figure quoted at the table is the figure on the invoice.
  • We will tell you plainly when a cheaper choice is the better one.
Asked often

Questions families actually ask

Can we bring our own celebrant or clergy?

Of course. Any celebrant, any faith, or none. If you don't have someone, we keep a shortlist of people we trust with the hard days, and we'll match you carefully.

Can the service be held somewhere other than your chapel?

Yes — graveside, your own place of worship, a garden, a golf club. We've done all of them. The chapel figure simply comes off the price.

Do we have to decide everything on the first call?

No. The first call settles one thing only: bringing the person who has died into our care. Every other decision keeps until you've slept.

What if we can't afford the service we want?

Tell us the figure you're comfortable with and we'll build the most fitting farewell inside it. There is no version of this conversation that embarrasses you.

Take the price list home. Talk it over. Then call.
