Principal designer

Marta Voss

I would rather get one material right than ten things nearly right.

Marta founded Harlowe & Voss in 2013 after a decade in joinery workshops and on site. She leads a studio of five, and still walks every house herself before a scheme is drawn.

The studio at 14 Rope Walk: a sample library and scheme boards in daylight

14 Rope Walk

A studio built around the sample library

The studio at 14 Rope Walk is mostly shelves: limewash chips, timber offcuts, stone tiles, and bolts of linen and wool, all filed by how they behave in light.

The four stages

What you hold at the end of each stage

  1. 01The Walkthrough

    What you hold

Measured notes on the rooms and the light, and an honest read on what the house wants to be.

  2. 02The Scheme

    What you hold

The scheme board: every material named and sampled, with the palette agreed before anything is ordered.

  3. 03The Making

    What you hold

An FF&E schedule and a build programme, with the trades booked and the deliveries dated.

  4. 04Install Week

    What you hold

The finished rooms, photographed and handed back, with a folder of what went where.

It starts with a walk through the house

Before anything is drawn, we spend a morning in the rooms with you, watching how the light moves and how you use the space.

The sample library

Materials chosen for how they age

Unlacquered brass that darkens, oak that warms, boucle that wears in rather than out. We choose materials for the house they will become, not the day they are installed.

Bring us a house to read

If you have a house and the light it gets, we have a book to start. The first walkthrough is where it begins.
