The store

One market hall, run like a kitchen

Everything on this page is in the room: the sheet on the board, the six departments, the deli behind the glass. If it is not good enough to cook at home, it does not get a ticket.

Open 7 days, from 7am

Deli counter hot from 7

The empty market hall at 6am, crates stacked and blank tickets waiting, cold light through the shopfront glass.

Six departments, one cold counter

The Produce Wall

40 crates a morning

Stacked by 6am, straight off the growers' vans. The soil stays on because scrubbed roots go soft a week faster.

The wall follows the season, not a planogram. In deep winter that means roots, brassicas and citrus doing the heavy lifting, and the sheet tells you what to do with them.

The Cheese Cave

80+ cultured wheels

Cashew bloomy rinds, aged almond blues, smoked coconut cheddars. Ask for a taste before you commit to a wedge.

The cave runs cool and slow. Wheels age in-house on pine shelves, turned twice a week, and the counter will cut to order from whatever is ripe.

The Cold Case

120+ chilled staples

Every milk worth pouring, cultured butters, fresh pasta, and the tofu that arrives the morning it was pressed.

We stock one excellent version of each staple instead of nine mediocre ones. If a better ferment or fresher block turns up, the shelf changes that week.

The Bulk Wall

90+ gravity bins

Bring your jars or grab ours. Grains, pulses, nuts and spices weighed on the zinc scale, priced by the gram.

The bins gravity-feed into paper bags or your own jars, weighed at the zinc scale. Tare first at the till and the numbers stay honest.

The Bakery Shelf

Landed by 7, gone by 10

Sourdough from The Night Oven, pastry from the deli ovens out back. Saturday is cardamom knot day. Come early.

Bread lands once, early. What is left at closing goes to the community fridge on Mill Street, so the shelf is empty on purpose by six.

The Local Shelf

19 makers, one shelf

Small-batch ferments, hot sauce and preserves from makers within an hour of the shop. The shelf pays them first.

Makers within an hour of the shop, stocked on consignment terms that pay them before us. Taste jars are open most Saturdays.

The counter menu

Written on the board each morning, priced when it is made, gone when it is gone. Dietary flags sit on every ticket; ask and the counter will walk you through anything.

How order-ahead works

  1. Call the counter before ten and tell us what you want from the board.

  2. We make it fresh in the eleven o'clock run and write your name on the bag.

  3. Collect at the till from noon. Held under the warm lamp, never the cold case.

Asked at the till, answered here

Do I have to be vegan to shop here?

No. Most of our regulars are not. Everything in the shop happens to be vegan, which just means you can buy anything on the shelf without reading the fine print.

Can you handle allergies at the deli?

Every ticket carries flags for gluten, nuts and soy, and the counter will check the day's prep with you before you order. One kitchen, shared benches, so trace amounts are always possible; tell us and we will be straight about what is safe.

Why is there no online cart?

Because the good stuff turns over too fast to photograph. The sheet changes twice a week, the deli board changes daily, and we would rather you get it at its best than ship it at its worst. Call the counter and we will set anything aside.

When is the quietest time to shop?

Weekdays between two and four. Saturdays before eight if you want the bakery shelf at full strength, and the last hour on Sunday if you like a bargain crate.

The board is better in person

Photos age; the sheet does not lie. Come see what the vans dropped this morning.
