Custom website or template: which should you buy?

Choose a template when you have found a design that fits your business and you are ready to supply the content. Choose a custom website when the design or customer flow needs to be worked out around you.

The decision becomes clearer when you separate two questions: how should the business look, and what should the website do? You might love a template's design and still need a custom booking or quoting workflow behind it. You might also need a distinctive custom design with very little functionality.

We sell both. Here is how we would assess the choice.

Start with your customer's next step

What does a first-time visitor need to understand before they contact you or buy?

For a local service business, they may need to see the work, check the service area and request a quote. A clear template can provide that structure. The quality of your photographs, the specificity of your services and the ease of making an enquiry will still matter.

A business that needs customers to configure a job, receive a calculated price and pay a deposit has more decisions to make. Someone has to define the rules and connect the steps. That work needs to be scoped even if the visual design starts from a template.

Write down those steps before choosing the route. It helps you avoid paying for design work you do not need, or buying a template that leaves the difficult part of the project untouched.

When to choose a template

A template is a strong option when you can look at it and see where your own work, services and content will go. You are choosing an established design rather than commissioning a new one.

You should be comfortable with its overall structure. Changing photographs and text is normal customisation. Replacing the navigation, layouts and customer flow across the site is a larger job, so ask for a customisation quote before you buy.

Check the practical details too: the pages included, how content is edited, the hosting requirements and the licence. Templates in our marketplace are licensed per live site. The design can suit a different kind of business from the demonstration. What matters is whether it presents your offer well.

When to commission a custom website

Custom work is useful when the website needs decisions a ready-made design cannot make for you.

You may have several services that customers struggle to distinguish. You may sell a technical product that needs a clear explanation. You may need the design to reflect a brand your customers already know. Or you may want an enquiry to become a quote, booking or CRM record without being copied between tools.

A useful custom-build brief names those requirements. “Make it look premium” is a direction; examples of your work, the customers you want and the action they should take give the designer something to work with.

Our client projects show different scopes, including website and identity work for ReamPDF and a website and SaaS build for AltSpeak. Use relevant work to assess a supplier's ability to deliver your project.

Compare the whole job

Question A template is a good fit when… Custom work is useful when…
Is the design direction settled? You have found a design you want to use The visual direction needs to be developed around your brand
Is the content ready? You know what belongs on each page The structure and explanation need substantial work
Is the customer flow straightforward? Existing pages and tools cover it Rules, permissions or integrations need to be designed
Who will finish the setup? You or your developer can customise and publish it You want the design and implementation handled together
How much will change? Most of the design can stay You would be rebuilding much of the template

Keep the business tools that already work

A new website does not have to replace a useful booking system, CRM or payment service. If the existing tool handles the job well, build the website around it.

Custom software becomes worth discussing when the current process creates a specific recurring problem: duplicate data entry, approvals scattered across inboxes, or quoting rules that an off-the-shelf tool cannot handle. Define that problem first. Custom software also needs testing and ongoing support. Be clear about who will manage access and maintain it.

What about SEO?

Whichever route you choose, the site needs useful content and a clear structure. Check its page titles, internal links and mobile experience. Paying for a custom design does not guarantee better rankings.

Google's SEO Starter Guide describes how useful content and clear structure help people and search engines understand a site. It does not give a template or a custom build a special status.

Ask your supplier how services will be organised, how important pages will be linked and what happens to your existing URLs if you are moving. Those are decisions you can inspect before launch.

Decide who will update the site

Ask to see the editing process for the exact site you are buying. Can you update a price or replace a photograph yourself? Which changes need development work? What happens when you want a new page?

Get the answer in the proposal. The right choice depends on how often the site changes and who will do that work. Do not base the purchase on an editing feature that has only been promised for a future release.

Choose your starting point

If a design in the template collection fits the job, start there. If your website needs a new direction or a connected business workflow, tell us about the project.

For a budget comparison, read what a small business website costs in Australia. You should be able to explain why the route you choose fits your business before you pay for it.
